Mid-century Modern
Queenstown wedding stylist Holly & Co. and photographer Kate Roberge collaborated with a group of wonderful creatives to help inspire couples with new ideas, different ways to gather and celebrate, and to bring a splash of colour into the wedding world…
‘The new normal, arising from Covid-19, has made everyone re-think so many aspects of their lives. Family, business, home cities, priorities and celebrations. Engaged couples can’t necessarily have everyone they would have wanted at their weddings, when they are oceans apart. This might have some couples turn to live-streaming or having a gorgeous video made of their day to share with friends and family, while other couples toy with the idea of eloping or down-sizing to an intimate wedding.
We chose to work with the Thomas Brown Art Gallery, an incredible character space for any gathering. Originally a cheese-factory, the walls are a tapestry of different building materials, from white-washed concrete and wooden beams to mint-green floating doors and the beautiful floor-to-ceiling French doors.
We made a slated, curved wooden backdrop that presented a nod towards the lines of a mid-century style, and then went running with that style in mind. For the flowers, we went for burnt reds, sienna terracotta and peach with some white and brown for contrast and to help the colours pop. The peach and soft pink tones of the stationery and the smokey acrylic chairs were the ideal match for a few guest seats. Gold lanterns were also tucked into the bottom of our ceremony backdrop to bring a little glam in.
For an intimate dinner, we again centred around the idea of terracotta, peach and intriguing textures. A burnt pink linen cloth set the scene and a rich colour base, which I then styled with white honeycomb charger plates set against a black dinner plate to help the colours pop against the fabric, with a peach menu card to circle the colour back around again. We also had gorgeous nude linen napkins, gold cutlery and divine crystal glassware to complete the setting. Concrete/stone vases and candle holders in a mixture of white and terracotta were filled with textile florals like preserved ruscus and fern leaves. With a mixture of white and sand taper candles running through the centre of the table, everything came together like it was meant to be!
The stunning cake was an incredible concrete-textured sienna-coloured cake with wafer paper detailing in a dark gold. An orchid stem was a flawless addition to the cake.’
